Gaga has met with her performance artist Lady Starlight during this time and, following a performance at Lollapalooza Festival in 2007 Gaga was signed by Vince Herbert to Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. Gaga was an apprentice songwriter during an apprenticeship at Famous Music Publishing. This firm was later bought by another company and rebranded as Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The result was that she was hired to write songs for Britney Spears and her labelmates New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. Gaga's debut album, "The Fame", was released in 2008 to little radio attention. Gaga went on tour across Europe as well as the US to promote the album. But it was not until Gaga had her first hit, "Just Dance", that mainstream attention began to be paid to the music industry. Gaga was suffering from a Labral tear on her right leg which she secretly nursed for a few weeks in order to ensure she was able to continue the tour. After her performance in Toronto Gaga, she was unable to walk and was suffering from severe discomfort. She was admitted to the hospital, and her tour was canceled.
